Although the Manchester Metropolitan University didn’t achieve university status until 1992, its history stretches back to 1824, when it began life as several colleges, including the Manchester School of Design and the Manchester Mechanics’ Institution. It evolved into a polytechnic in the 1970s and, since becoming a university, has absorbed further educational establishments, including the Manchester School of Physiotherapy and the Manchester Royal Infirmary School. Today, it's one of the most desirable places to study in the country, receiving an estimated 52,000 applications each year.
