Lewes is an ancient Sussex town, vital to the Saxons for defence thanks to its position on top of a hill with views along the coastline in both directions. William the Conqueror built a castle here, and its stone successor is still a popular visitor attraction. The town has plenty of sites for visitors to explore, such as Anne of Cleves House, although Henry VIII’s fourth bride never actually lived here! The town is perhaps most famous now for its annual Bonfire Night celebrations, in which barrels of lighted tar are rolled down to the river, and Guy Fawkes is replaced by the Pope on the fire. This is in remembrance of 17 Protestant martyrs who were burned here by Mary I, or Bloody Mary as she is popularly known.
Today, Lewes is a thriving town with a multitude of shops and high street restaurants. However, this busy little location tends to get very crowded, especially during the summer, when parking in Lewes can be a challenge. NCP’s Lewes car park at Eastgate is a convenient place to leave the car when you go sightseeing or shopping, and you can pre-book it too, to make your life even easier.
