St Albans Russell Avenue
Nowadays St Albans is a thriving market town as well as a base for commuters from London, but for centuries it was at the very heart of English History. It was a regional capital of the Britons before the Romans arrived, and later became an important ecclesiastical settlement. Two major battles were fought here during the Wars of the Roses, and there are many historic sites to explore, most of them within easy walking distance of each other.
You can still see the walls of Roman Verulamium between St Michael’s Church and Reading Museum. The walk is a pleasant one, taking you across a park and more Roman ruins, and then past two old coaching inns, the huge Cathedral and on to the historic High Street. The Tudor buildings here are a major attraction for sightseers, and there’s also a clock tower that dates to 1412. Those tight Medieval lanes don’t leave much room for parking in St Albans, though, so the NCP’s St Albans car park at Russell Avenue close to the centre of town is a great place for convenient and hassle-free, all-day parking. It’s the ideal place to leave your car before heading out for a day’s exploring, and you can pre-book your place too, for maximum convenience.
